Phi Delta Phi's History and Heritage
Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity, established in the year 1869 to promote a higher standard of professional ethics, is the oldest professional fraternity in the Western Hemisphere. It holds a unique position in the history of the North American bench, bar and the law schools. During the past decade, Phi Delta Phi's reputation as an organization devoted to legal excellence has begun to spread throughout Latin and South America.
The Fraternity is the second oldest North American legal organization in continuous existence, established only six months after the Columbus, Ohio Bar Association and nine years before the American Bar Association.
Phi Delta Phi has chartered over one hundred and sixty chapters -- called Inns-- in the Western Hemisphere since 1869, and the number of Inns increases yearly. Phi Delta Phi has initiated in excess of 144,000 members making it the largest legal fraternity in existence.
