The Hispanic Law Student Association, "HLSA," is a legal society at Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center, founded in 1980 to bring together students of both Hispanic and American heritage, as well as to promote and advance Hispanic awareness within the community. HLSA works with other organizations on campus to sponsor speakers on subjects
of common interest to the student body.
HLSA members have participated in various community service projects including volunteer work at McLamore Children's Home, Toy Drive at a local hospital in the community, legal clinics run by different legal organizations, as well as academic activities like the Moot Court Competition sponsored by the Hispanic National Bar Association.
HLSA organizes and holds an annual banquet where all students and many legal professionals are invited. This is a wonderful networking event. This banquet honors an attorney, judge, or law firm, who has taken an active part in helping the Hispanic community. The 2000-2001 recipient of the Hispanic Law Student Association's Outstanding Hispanic Community Awareness Award was Carlton Bober, Esq., the former president of the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association. The 2001-2002 recipient of the Hispanic Law Student Association's Outstanding Hispanic Community Awareness Award was Cesar Alvarez President of Greenberg & Traurig Law Firms. The 2002-2003 recipient of the Hispanic Law Student Association's Outstanding Hispanic Community Awareness Award was Miami-Dade County Mayor: Alex Penelas.
