American Constitution Society

The American Constitution Society is a national organization of law students, law professors, judges, practicing lawyers and others. We seek to revitalize and transform the legal debate, from law school classrooms, to federal courtrooms, to the congressional hearing rooms where judicial nominations are weighed. Through student and lawyer chapters, speaking and media programs, public education efforts, publications, and other activities, we are working:

  • To counter the dominant vision of American law today, a narrow conservative vision that lacks appropriate regard for the ways in which the law affects people's lives.
  • To restore the fundamental principles of respect for human dignity, protection of individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice to their rightful and traditionally central, place in American law.
  • To strengthen the intellectual foundations of -- and the public case for -- a more progressive vision of the law on issues including: privacy; freedom of speech; federalism; antidiscrimination and affirmative action; gay rights; reproductive choice; disability rights; labor and consumer rights; protection of health, safety, and the environment; the criminal justice system; immigration; and international human rights.
  • To build a strong network of law students, professors, lawyers, judges, and others all across the country, ready to work for change in American law.

We hope that, through our student chapters, law students will gain a greater understanding of the legitimacy of a vision of the law that gives human values a central place. As new students begin the process of learning to think like lawyers, we believe the activities of these chapters speeches, debates, symposia, student meetings, research and writing projects will demonstrate to them that rigorous legal thinking does not require the abandonment of such values.

We hope you will join us -- become a member; contribute to our effort; participate in our programs. For additional information about membership, go to our national website at: www.ACSLaw.org.
