The date of September 23, 2008, will be forever ingrained in the minds of 56 new graduates from Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center who were sworn into the Florida Bar at a special ceremony held that day at the Law Center. The ceremony honored the recent graduates for accomplishing their goal of becoming an attorney, having successfully completed three rigorous years of law school, a stringent character and fitness evaluation by The Bar, and the oft dreaded bar exam. The Law Center had a total of 169 graduates (85.8%) pass the July 2008 General Bar Examination.

Dean Athornia Steele set the tone for the evening in the large courtroom of the Law Center.  He congratulated the honorees and shared some wisdom by stating, "One of my favorite passages comes from the Old Testament prophet Micah.  The question is asked ‘what is expected of us,’ and the answer (paraphrased) is to act justly-do justice, to seek mercy-love kindness, and to walk humbly-to act with humility."  His moving speech ended with the statement, "As you take this momentous step, we your teachers and now your colleagues will be listening for your footsteps resounding in the halls of justice."

Judge Melanie May (’81), 4th District Court of Appeal, presided over the official ceremony and also addressed the graduates. Janet Mosseri, associate dean of student affairs, called roll, and Broward County Court Judges Catalina Avalos (’96) and Robert Diaz (’84), 17th judicial circuit, led the Oath of Attorney to swear in the graduates.  Family, friends, faculty members, and law school administrators cheered as the graduates’ years of hard work culminated into a welcomed membership on The Bar.  All enjoyed a celebratory reception.

Shepard Broad Law Center’s bar passage rate was the fourth highest in the state of Florida.
