Commencemment 2007

The 39th Commencement of Nova Southeastern University will begin at 11:00 a.m. The ceremony lasts approximately 2 ½ hours and sometimes less. Admission is free for the guests of candidates marching in the ceremony. Since the Bank Atlantic Center is a large facility guests will not need tickets to attend.

Commencement Ceremony
This ceremony recognizes and celebrates successful completion of your academic program. Participation in the commencement ceremony does not guarantee that a student has graduated; it also is not a requirement to graduate. However, this ceremony is traditionally a rite of passage which family and friends anticipate and remember as a formal marker in a graduate’s life.

Eligible Students

You are eligible to participate if you finished or will finish your degree requirements Fall 2007, Winter 2008, or Summer 2008. Mailings with general information will be sent out in March. Included in the mailing will be a participation form which, will be used to order your cap and gown and to reserve your place in the ceremony. Also included will be general information about the ceremony (i.e., ordering announcements and special hotel rates).

Grads, this is the first time that at May graduation you will have the option of having a full time Professor 'hood you' on stage. You must first verify that the professor you select is attending graduation and that the/she consents to hood you (full time professors only). Then you must submit your GRADUATION CEREMONY form to Ellen Marzullo as soon as possible. If you are not requesting a professor hood you then a Board of Governor will do the honors. Faculty only no family members.

Getting your Diploma
You will not receive an official diploma at the commencement ceremony. At the ceremony you will be called to stage and announced as a candidate for graduation. At this time, you will receive a certificate of congratulations. To receive an official diploma, if you have not already received one, you must submit an Application for Degree to the Office of Student Service at the Law Center. Your diploma will be mailed to you upon certification of your graduation from the University. It is recommended that candidates for graduation check on Webstar to make certain that the correct name and address are on file with the Office of Student Service at the Law Center. Contact the coordinator of degree conferrals and diplomas at the registrars  by calling 1-800-541-6682 ext. 7271, to confirm this and to ask additional questions regarding your diploma.

Wearing your Regalia
So that you look your very best, here are a few suggestions on how to wear your cap, gown, and hood. Your cap should be worn so that the mortarboard is level and not placed on the back or side of your head. The crown should rest approximately one and one-half inches above each ear. This also helps to assure that the mortarboard is level. Your tassel should be worn on the left-hand side and will remain on the left. Drape your hood over your right arm during the processional. It will remain on your right arm until you go up and get hooded.

Graduates will be able to request hooding by a favorite professsor. If you do not wish to be hooded by a professor, you will be hooded by a member of the hooding committee. More details about hooding will be made available during the winter semester.
